Conditions Benefited by Medical Acupuncture

In China, acupuncture is used to treat all the illnesses. However, we only use acupuncture to treat conditions where its use has been proven to be superior, safe and effective.

Acupuncture is perhaps one of the most extensively studies of all alternative medicine and research papers are being published everyday. When we are satisfied a new application that meets our criteria (safe, effective, and superior) we will incorporate it in our practice. An example is the use of acupuncture as an adjust therapy for infertility.

Both National Institutes of Health and World Health Organization have conducted clinical studies acceptable to western trained doctors (called double blind studies). The following are the list of conditions that are proven to be benefited by acupuncture. However, there are several others, where it is difficult to perform the clinical studies due to inherent difficulties in the use of appropriate controls, such as placebos and sham acupuncture groups. So there are conditions that will be benefited by acupuncture that are not included in this list.

Pros and cons of Acupuncture
by Mayo Clinic

Benefits of Acupuncture:

  • Acupuncture is safe when performed properly.
  • It has few side effects.
  • It can be useful as a complement to other treatment methods.
  • It's becoming more available in conventional medical settings.
  • It helps control certain types of pain.
  • It may be an alternative if you don't respond to or don't want to take pain medications.

Risks of Acupuncture:

Acupuncture isn't safe if you have a bleeding disorder or if you're taking blood thinners. The most common side effects of acupuncture are soreness, bleeding or bruising at the needle sites. You might feel tired after a session. Rarely, a needle may break or an internal organ might be injured. If needles are reused, infectious diseases may be accidentally transmitted. However, these risks are low in the hands of a competent, certified acupuncture practitioner. (Please note that we only use sterilized, disposable needles approved by FDA.)
